As we reach the end of another liturgical year, we pause to reflect on this past year, to examine how we lived our faith in the daily events of life. As we reflect on the past, we also look forward to the coming year with hope. No matter what we have experienced this past year, Christ, our loving Shepherd, will lead us forward. Hope does not disappoint!
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. As Americans, the title king has little to do with our lived experience. Yet we celebrate Jesus as our King, a King unlike earthly rulers. God is love, and when we proclaim Jesus as our King, we march forward under the banner of love pledging to help build a world where everyone is seen, has a voice, and a seat at the table.
In his short life, Jesus shared his vision of how we should strive to live. He faced adversity, but never lost hope. His greatness didn’t come from wealth, strength, or physical appearance, but rather love. At the darkest moment, while he hung on the cross, Jesus remained loving and offered forgiveness to the repentant thief. It was the same when he triumphed over death. His first words to his friends were “Peace be with you”. He didn’t mention their betrayal or how they abandoned him on the cross; he didn’t seek revenge. He simply loved.
My friends, take a few moments this week to reflect upon your lived faith journey this past year. What did you do well? What could you have done better? Let your reflection help you set goals for this coming year as to how you can better live your faith in the here and now.
May God bless you and your loved ones today, tomorrow, and forever more.
