As we approach the end of our liturgical year, our scripture readings take on an ominous tone. This weekend, our reading from the book of Daniel and our gospel reading from Mark signal the end of time and encourage us to stand firm in faith, no matter what is happening around us. Despite the ominous tone, these readings are hope-filled.
It is important for us to understand the background of these scripture passages because they are not meant to be predictive of what will happen in the future, but rather, they are reflective of what the people of the time were experiencing. They understood the nuances of the words and language and found comfort and peace as a traumatized people. Today, our world is also filled with uncertainty about what the future may bring. Like the people of old, our scripture readings are designed to bring us hope, comfort, and reassurance.
In our gospel reading, the words of Jesus provide us with hope, “Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, summer is near.” No matter what we experience in life, no matter what the storms of life may throw at us, God is with us, loving us and giving us hope. Just like the bare and stiff branch of the fig tree during the harsh winter, it becomes tender and green, sprouting new life, which leads to growth and hope.
We close our liturgical year with hope, hope that God is with us. God is with us, laughing with us, suffering with us, calming our fears, crying with us, celebrating with us, simply loving us. We have nothing to fear as life begins and ends in God’s love. No matter what we do or fail to do, God’s love will remain, and God will be with us every step of the way.
As we close out this liturgical year, we will soon turn our attention to the hope that Advent brings. Our theme as a parish community for this coming liturgical year is “Hope Does Not Disappoint.” May we never lose hope, no matter what life throws at us, no matter what we may experience, God will be with us providing us hope, peace, and abundant love.
My friends, “Hope Does Not Disappoint!”
May God bless you and your loved ones today, tomorrow, and forever more.
