As we end the liturgical year, we pause to celebrate the solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Unlike earthly rulers, Jesus does not lord his power over us, but rather, he lifts us up and empowers us to be our best selves. Rather than armies used to wage war, Jesus uses the power of love to invite, to forgive, and to welcome all people into his loving embrace. Jesus, our king, gives us a task to share his love with all whom we encounter in life, especially those in need.
Our reading from Matthew’s gospel this weekend highlights the type of service Jesus expects from us, his disciples. We hear the beautiful words, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me….Amen I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least of my sisters or brothers of mine, you did for me.” Jesus is clear, how we treat one another is a reflection of our love for God.
There is not much we can add to the beautiful words of our gospel reading. As we prepare to begin Advent next week, I encourage each of us to spend some quiet time in prayer reflecting on the words of this weekend’s gospel, Matthew 25:31-46. Let the Spirit guide you as you develop your spiritual goals for this coming liturgical year, so that we can truly be our best selves and honor Jesus, our king of love, our most gentle Good Shepherd.
May God bless you and your loved ones today, tomorrow, and forevermore.
