This weekend, we celebrate two important days, Mother’s Day and the Ascension of Jesus. The Feast of the Ascension celebrates more than just Jesus ascending into heaven. Jesus spent his ministry raising others up, setting people free from all that weighed them down. The reality is that all of us want to be raised up, to live ascended lives. We want to break free from all the stuff that weighs us down, but sometimes it takes a helping hand, often the hand of a mother.
In life, I have been blessed with positive and strong women who have helped nurture and form me. I am grateful for my mother, who has shown me unconditional love, shared her gift of faith, and has stood with me through the good times and the challenges of life. In so many ways, a mother’s love reflects God’s love for us.
It is not only mothers, but also grandmothers, aunts, sisters, nieces, teachers, ministers, and friends who are mothers to so many in life. Just as Jesus spent his ministry raising people up, he commissioned all of us to go forth in his name to raise others up, to nurture and care for one another. Sunday is a day for us to remember the women who have nurtured and loved us in their own special way. We thank God for their love, compassion, and nurturing touch.
I am grateful for my mother, and all the women who have been part of my life. For those who have gone before us, we give thanks and remember. For those women who still grace our lives, we give thanks and express our love.
May God bless you and your loved ones today, tomorrow, and forever more.
