Love is a powerful motivator. When people heard Jesus speak, St. Mark tells us they were amazed. They were moved not only by his words, but more importantly, with the conviction and the love with which he spoke. Jesus was able to see through all the superficial facades people put on and touch them at the core of their being, drawing out their inner beauty and goodness. He didn’t judge people, he simply loved them. As we ponder the depth of God’s love for us, we are invited to reflect on the importance of love in our own lives. Jesus invites us to open ourselves to the power of love – love of God, love of neighbor, and love of self. In many ways, I think love of God and neighbor are easier than learning to truly love ourselves. When we love ourselves, we grow in God’s love and our lives are changed.
Loving ourselves begins with changing how we see ourselves. When we see ourselves as being loved by God at the very core of our being, we are inspired to be our best selves, understanding we are holy and worthy of dignity and respect. Jesus taught us that fear does not illicit inner change, love does.
As we continue our journey through Lent, let us remember to pause and to spend time in daily prayer. As we pray, spend time reflecting on God’s love for you, letting that love clear out the self-doubt and the fear and regret we sometimes hold so tightly. Take time to bask in God’s love, letting it fill you up and inspire you to truly believe you are God’s beloved. There is nothing that can compare to the feeling being loved, especially God’s love.
May God bless you and your loved ones today, tomorrow, and forevermore.
