This weekend we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity. It has taken the Church centuries to develop the complex doctrine of the Trinity that leaves most of us scratching our heads. Rather than trying to focus on the theology of the Trinity, I think it is more important for us strive to live the reality of the Trinity in our daily lives. Just as our Creator, our Redeemer, and our Sanctifier are united in a bond of love, we too are invited to enter into the lived reality of that love as we journey in faith.
From the dawn of creation, God formed us and breathed life into us, calling us to live in bond of love with God and with one another. But we know from history and from our own lived experience, too often, we turn away, we push back, but God continually invites us to trust in God’s mercy, almost like a sacred dance where God reaches out and we push back and turn away.
As part of that sacred dance, Jesus came into the world to show us what it means to be in a relationship with God. Jesus taught us that God was not some distant angry being, but rather was a tender and caring God who loves us without measure. Jesus showed us how our relationship with the Divine influences and transforms us, empowering us to live out the reality of our faith.
At the end of his earthly mission, Jesus breathed on the disciples giving them the gift of the Holy Spirit, our advocate and guide. It is the Holy Spirt that sanctifies us and dwells in and among us, encouraging us as we continue our journey of faith. The Holy Spirit gives us the grace and courage to live our faith, reminding us that God is with us no matter where we find ourselves.
Just as it took the Church centuries to articulate the doctrine of the Trinity, it takes each of us a lifetime of dancing with God, of pushing and pulling, as we discern who God is for us and how we can best live our faith in thought word and deed. Rather than trying to wrap our minds around some complex theology, let’s keep it simple, trusting that God our Creator, Jesus our Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit our Sanctifier will always be with us, as we journey in faith.
May God bless you and your loved ones today, tomorrow, and forevermore.
